PhD Geneticist, Reiki Master, Yoga Teacher, Outdoor Enthusiast, Western mind, Eastern soul.
The duality of western and eastern practices has been a theme in my life. I began my study of yoga in 1998 during college and soon found myself applying the breathing techniques outside of the classroom when stressful situations arose. I became a devoted yoga student as a refuge from the stressors my biomedical studies as well as to a way for me to develop a cherished community as I have transplanted from Texas to Baltimore to Lake Tahoe to Seattle.
After graduating with my PhD in Human Genetics, I moved to Lake Tahoe, CA to take a break and reset from my lab lifestyle. While teaching snowboarding at Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley), I had a significant fall that left me with a concussion and dislodged my sacrum. I sought healing by attending 3-4 weekly yoga classes at the Wanderlust Squaw Valley Yoga Studio, and eventually returned there to complete my 200-hour yoga teacher training in 2017. In 2019, after experiencing the personal healing benefits of the ancient practice, I completed my advanced 25-hour training in Yoga Nidra.
I first learned Reiki as a self-healing tool while I was navigating my way through my PhD program in at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Even though I was skeptical at first, I experienced immediate results and practiced regularly. I finished my Reiki 2 training within the same week of defending my PhD thesis in 2011, and I received my Reiki Master Training and Attunement in 2014. I followed up with Angelic Reiki Master Training and Attunement in 2019.
A significant medical trauma caused me to step back from my corporate lifestyle in 2017 and spurred my passion to pursue a career as a healer, educator, and curator of health and wellness experiences. In 2020-2021 I trained in Basic Neurolinguistic Psychology (NLP) with Hypnosis and completed certifications as a Stress Management Consultant and Mindfulness Meditation Trainer through Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. I receive so much joy from teaching others to harness their intuition and tap into their own inner healer.
In the fall of 2022, I have returned to field of genetics and am pursing my Masters in Genetic Counseling at the University of Washington. I have the goal of integrating the practices I have learned for my own health and healing for the benefit of my patients.
I have been drawn to more eastern practices as my career in western medicine has developed. The more that I study both, the more I understand the interconnectivity of them. While sometimes it seems that I have stumbled upon this path, I understand that nothing happens by accident. I’m delighted for the opportunity to join the community of Mind.Body.Hum both as a student and as teacher. I value all students in all bodies at all points along their journey. I hope you’ll join me on the cushion or the mat.
